Reisverslag West Coast
5 januari 2017
On our way to the Westcoast we drive by Castle Hill, so we make a stop over there. Castle Hill is one of the places where movies like LOTR and Narnia were filmed. There are these giant rocks and you feel very tiny standing beside it. The next stop is for a cup of coffee in The Wobble Kea in Arthurs pass. We take the road to Moana to have lunch, a son of Sharon lives here. We finally get to the farm where we will sleep the first couple of days. Just 10 minutes away from Punakaiki.
On Wednesday we go to the Truman Track, a 15 minute walk down to the bay, climbing over some rocks to get there. A lovely place! Big rocks on the beach, a small waterfall coming down. Not even always touching the ground because the wind has blown away the water before it got there. You can go around the corner but the tide is coming in and you can get stuck here or worse. We have lunch at the Pancake Rock Café, a stack of pancakes of course!
By the time the tide is the highest we go to the pancake rocks to see the blowholes. Last time we were here, five years ago it was low tide and we did not have enough time to stay. It is quit spectacular to see the blowholes. The tide and the wind push the water in side and when you’re lucky they splash against the rocks and throw up a lot of water. Mind you, it doesn’t happen all the time but we are lucky enough to get some of it on film.
Thursday morning we go to the Pororari river. We want to walk a track. There are several choices, you can go for 1 hour or three up to 8,5 hours, the last one is 24 km. We prefer the 3 hour walk. Going on the track you have to pass a sort of fence. It has the form of an arrow with a moving piece in it. It prevents the passing of bicycles, it is a walking path. The path follows the river and it is very beautiful. We walk through the rainforest, huge palm trees, trees with a kinds of parasites on it growing. Amazing to see. The path is mainly grit but has staircases, bridges, rocks and some mud to walk on. At some point you are just 2 meters above the river and 5 minutes later you are 30 meters above it. We even have to go through a kind of cave. We take a lot of pictures and constantly want to know what’s around the next corner. After some time we come to a split point, we can go on to the left to the right or back. To the left and to the right are longer walks so we decide to go back. Sharon is waiting for us by the car.
After lunchtime we go to Barrytown beach, searching for greenstone. It is a very sunny day and we have a lot of fun on the beach. Beaches in NZ aren’t like our beaches, this one is stones at the entrance followed by black sand with stones spread on it. This is not a beach where you can swim in the sea like on our Dutch beaches. The water can suddenly be very deep, there can be rocks hidden under the water and the stream can be very strong.
We do find some green stones, whether it is the real greenstone, we don’t know. Ad sees a shark head on the beach, I missed it. I don’t miss the high wave that comes quit suddenly rolling in. it swipes Ad almost of his feet. We go back the way we came, don’t want to be here when the tide is high, the stream is pretty strong. Wet shoes, sandy feet for us both and wet trousers for my. Not to mention the sand-flies, I don’t like them but they seem to like me a lot!
