Road trip day 5 and 6
Door: Linet
19 Januari 2017 | Nieuw Zeeland, Milford Sound
We have done this trip 5 years ago but enjoyed it so much we want to do it again. We get up early in the morning to be ready in time. It is different this time, because we are going with a small company named Fiordland Tours. They organize small group tours. A small bus, 15 passengers, and a wonderful driver/guide named Jacky. We enjoy it very much, this company makes several stops on our way in to Milford, photoshoots, a small walk, a walk to Marian cascade, morning tea in Gunn’s Camp, very very nice. And if there is not enough time to do it on the way in, we’ll do it on the way back. Jacky takes care of the boarding passes for the boat, also smaller than back then. And off we go, Milford Sound. The weather is not all shiny but it is dry for the moment and that makes Milford more friendly and greener. But still, you lose all idea of perspective, we are so tiny and the mountains around us raise up to 1400 m. We don’t have that idea when we look at them but it is true. You can see it by the boats that are on the lake, we saw how huge they are and compared to the mountains we get some vision on the difference. There are seals resting and playing on the flat rocks in the water, but we don’t see any dolphins or penguins. Well, you can’t have it all I guess.
It starts raining during the day and on our way back in the bus we see a lot of falls that were not there in the morning. It is really amazing. On our way back we have the opportunity to walk over the old bridge at Tutoko bridge, but it is really raining now, so nobody wants to. Near the Homer tunnel there is a new part built, as a protection for rockfall. Of course we see the cheeky Kea’s, the only mountain parrot in the world.
When we get back in Te Anau, Jacky brings us all to our accommodations, we are the last ones and she brings us in to the camp as far as she can. It was a lovely day and we enjoyed it so much more than 5 years ago.
Sunday morning. We fill up the buses with water, go to the dump station to clean out the toilets, it is my turn, and get rid of the dirty water.
On the road again on to Wanaka, where we will catch up with more relatives. We can’t find the freedom camping sites we were hoping for, so we end up in Albertsville. There is a POP camping, Parking on Property, in the back of a restaurant/bar. You can park here for free if you use something inside, a meal or a drink or but a bottle of wine. The rules are simple, you don’t drink outside on the property and you are not allowed to barbeque.
We call our relatives and they come over to us, we have an meal in the restaurant all together, so the bar can’t complain about our use. It is very nice to meet new relatives and see others again. We have a very nice evening. When everybody is back to their holiday homes, we go to our buses.
